Fast and Furious guns claim another victim in Mexico; Time for a national conversation?

While the horrific shooting massacre in Newtown, Conn., last week has much of the nation clamoring for a renewed “conversation” on guns and their place in American society, we’re reminded today of another rash of gun deaths which it seems no one is willing to talk about. CBS News investigative correspondent Sharyl Attkisson remains one of the few in the media who is following the story and today reports that another death has been linked to the Obama administration’s botched Fast and Furious gun walking operation.

The latest known recovery is a Romanian AK-47-type WASR-10 rifle. It was picked up at a crime scene Nov. 23 in Ciudad Guamuchil, Sinaloa, Mexico. That’s the same area and weekend of the shootout involving [beauty queen Maria Susana] Flores Gamez’s death. A trace report shows the rifle was purchased by Uriel Patino, the Fast and Furious suspect who allegedly bought more than 700 weapons while under ATF’s watch. Records show Patino bought the rifle and nine other semi-automatic rifles at an Arizona gun shop March 16, 2010.

Hundreds of deaths have been attributed to the Fast and Furious program, including Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry, who was killed two years ago. With the discovery of the rifle at the site of the shootout which killed Flores Gamez, the body count continues to rise. It’s long past time for that conversation, but Attorney General Eric Holder isn’t talking.
