CNN explores three-year old phenomenon of Mipsterz, community of Muslim hipsters

CNN’s tweet teases that these Muslim hipsters are breaking a cardinal hipster rule, and that rule is apparently “never self-identify as a hipster.”

They do choose to self identify as hipsters, and a small group of friends even jokingly began calling themselves “Mipsterz” in 2012. A year later, Mipsterz broke out in a big way with a music video showing young Muslim women “taking selfies, skateboarding, fencing and eating ice cream — doing all the things that young people like to do.” (Fencing?)

Today, there are thousands who have signed up as members of the Mipsterz Facebook group. And that’s about it. Good night, and good luck.
