Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake appeared with WBAL radio’s Mary Beth Marsden this afternoon to discuss the release by City Hall of some 7,000 emails related to the Freddie Gray riots which ravaged part of the city in late April.

What about the mayor’s infamous statement, “We provided spaces for protesters to destroy if they chose to do that”?
The Baltimore Sun reports that among the emails released was a note from former police commissioner Anthony Batts to a supporter. “In short, because this was a protest against the Baltimore Police Department,” Batts wrote, “we couldn’t be seen as the aggressors or instigators, as such we needed to give them space. Going forward we will tighten up the reins on the marches to ensure everyone’s safety.”
Mayor Rawlings-Blake said that remains the correct approach, however. “What public safety experts have said is that we used the right protocols and practices and the right strategy to de-escalate the situation and bring peace and order to the streets.”
