Media piles on Jeb Bush for statement about funding for women's health; 'I misspoke'

Gov. Jeb Bush, just announced as the No. 2 pick for Thursday night’s GOP debate (no surprise there), hit a rhetorical speed bump today when he suggested to the Southern Baptist Convention that women’s health in America was overfunded. Planned Parenthood’s Cecile Richards was poised to jump on that comment immediately.

Well, if each and every anti-abortion video can be stamped “highly edited,” it’s only fair for Bush to say his words were taken out of context, right? Best for the media to get them out there before he has a chance to put them back into context.

Time managed to track down Hillary Clinton’s official comment in no time, as did CNN.

Clean up in Aisle Jeb!

It didn’t take long for Bush to post a statement to his website, explaining that he misspoke.

With regards to women’s health funding broadly, I misspoke, as there are countless community health centers, rural clinics, and other women’s health organizations that need to be fully funded. They provide critical services to all, but particularly low-income women who don’t have the access they need.

I was referring to the hard-to-fathom $500 million in federal funding that goes to Planned Parenthood – an organization that was callously participating in the unthinkable practice of selling fetal organs. Democrats and Republicans agree we absolutely must defund them and redirect those funds to other women’s health organizations.

Now that that’s cleared up, does anyone have any interest in revisiting Bush’s comments about Planned Parenthood’s “unthinkable practice of selling fetal organs”? Anyone? Hillary?
