Justice Department to sue Ferguson, Mo., over policing practices; Eric Holder weighs in

As Twitchy reported late last month, the Justice Department and the City of Ferguson, Mo., birthplace of the #BlackLivesMatter movement, had reached a proposed consent degree consisting of 131 pages of guidance governing how Ferguson police would go about performing their duties in the future, along with guidance on hiring, training, and disciplinary action. The city was given until Feb. 9 to approve the deal or face litigation.

Apparently U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch doesn’t think that Ferguson is moving quickly enough to comply, and that a federal lawsuit against the city will speed things up.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch estimated that the cost of monitoring compliance with the guidelines would cost cash-strapped Ferguson $350,000 for the first year. Two taxes increases have been placed on the April ballot to help offset the cost.

Look who’s piped up. Former Attorney General Eric Holder explains why the Justice Department “had to sue.”
