It was March 2022 when Florida legislators began looking at repealing the 1967 Reedy Creek Improvement Act, which allows Disney World to act as its own government. “I think what has happened is there’s a lot of these special privileges that are not justifiable, but because Disney had held so much sway, they were able to sustain a lot of special treatment over the years,” Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said at the time.
Even some conservatives said there was no need for DeSantis to “salt the earth” after his victory over Disney and its vocal opposition to the Parental Rights in Education bill. Democratic Gov. Jared Polis tried to lure Disney World to relocate to Colorado, and smooth-brain Keith Olbermann even suggested rebuilding Disney World in Puerto Rico.
The act was repealed, and Disney is no longer a self-governing city. At a press conference, Gov. Ron DeSantis said the repeal freed up some land not owned by Disney and joked that someone had floated the idea of building a state prison next to Disney World. Having no sense of humor, the Left immediately spread the word that DeSantis was planning to build a state prison there.
