From Breakup Texts to Co-Parenting Peace, How Artificial Intelligence Is Reshaping Human Connection

People are turning to Artificial Intelligence to help them with everything from science fair projects to helping them break up with their boyfriends through perfectly crafted texts.

Artificial intelligence is now writing “It’s not you, it’s me” texts for Gen Z.

A new national survey from dating assistant Wingmate found that 41% of young adults have used AI to help end a relationship, with women slightly more likely than men to let the bots do the dirty work.

The survey, which polled over 1,000 U.S. adults who’ve used AI for dating, shows just how deep AI has embedded itself in modern romance. Nearly half of 18- to 29-year-olds said they’ve turned to AI tools to write breakup texts, apologies or manage relationship conflict.

It's not just young people using tools like Grok or ChatGPT for assistance. I have a difficult ex-husband. He lives to start text wars. Recently, I have turned to Grok to help me answer him and hopefully keep the conversation friendly and non-confrontational. Here is the prompt I use: 'what would Chase Hughes or Chris Voss say in reply to this message'. Chase Hughes and Chris Voss are ex-CIA agents who specialize in communication. Here is an example of a reply it suggested:

"Hey [Sender’s Name], it sounds like this is really weighing on you, and I can sense the urgency here. I’m sorry to hear there’s been no contact for over two weeks, especially around Father’s Day—that must feel significant. Can you share a bit more about what’s going on? I want to make sure I fully understand so I can help address this the best way possible. Thanks for reaching out."

“Hi [Sender’s Name], it sounds like you’re really concerned about not hearing back for over two weeks, especially with Father’s Day passing. That must feel frustrating and important to address. I’m here to help—can you tell me more about what’s happening? It seems like this is a priority for you, and I want to get this right.”

While I don't have to use either of these responses, they do offer great jump off points to help improve my communication skills.

While some are skeptical about artificial intelligence enhancing human communication, I’ve found it invaluable. My emotional nature can sometimes cloud conversations, but Grok’s objective, emotion-free perspective brings the clarity and balance needed for more effective dialogue.

AI is a powerful tool designed to enhance your life, not something to fear. It can answer practical questions like 'How much Benadryl is safe for my dog?' or 'How do I unclog my bathroom sink effectively?' while also helping navigate tricky text conversations by disarming difficult people. We’re in a bold new world, but it’s one worth embracing.
