George Will’s Painful Prescription: a Breeze for the Rich, a Nightmare for the Working Class

AP Photo/Yuki Iwamura

George Will went on Bill Maher to express his desire for commie Mamdani to win the New York City election for Mayor. Will thinks it's time for big city folks to get a taste of what 'real Socialism' feels like and he expects that will wake them from their slumber. He suspects things will get so bad they won't want to try that again for a while.

That approach might work for the very rich or the very poor, but it leaves the working and lower-middle classes—like me—struggling. The wealthy have enough resources to shield themselves from the effects of a decade or two of socialist-leaning policies. In California, for instance, the affluent navigate Governor Gavin Newsom’s administration and Democratic policies by leveraging their wealth: they purchase access to top-tier healthcare and schools, hire drivers to avoid traffic and road blockages, and essentially buy their way out of inconveniences. Their lives remain comfortable because money insulates them.On the other hand, the very poor often rely on government support, which can provide a safety net. For some, including those struggling with addiction or choosing homelessness, this support might even enable a lifestyle where basic needs are met without working.

But for people like me, a single mom working two jobs, the system feels stacked against us. I earn too much for significant government assistance yet not enough to escape the burdens of rising costs and policy impacts. I’m juggling community college tuition for my child, supporting an aging parent, and keeping my household afloat. A major expense—like a broken appliance or home repair—could derail everything, and I pray daily it doesn’t happen.Inflation has hit us hard. Our grocery budget has doubled or even tripled since 2018, making every trip to the store a challenge.

People in my position—the working class and lower middle class—bear the brunt when political experiments, like socialism, shift economic priorities. I can’t help but feel that figures like George Will might overlook the harm this does to families like mine, who are just trying to survive and thrive.

Exactly! Healthcare is still a mess from Obamacare and now, even when Republicans in charge, it hasn't returned to the days when insurance was reasonable and co-pays didn't break the bank. Once these policies are in place, they never go away.

Exactly. When you have never been lower middle class in this economy and in this decade, it's hard to understand.

Sane Americans should do everything we can to stop the scourge Mamdani brings if at all possible. It's what is best for all of America.
