Learning from Mistakes: The Dangers of Roblox and the Importance of Protecting Our Children Online

Fuzzy Chimp

My youngest child is nineteen years old. She's a wonderful young woman, despite my parenting mistakes and my choice of her father. His behavior is his responsibility, and my parenting errors are mine. I share this with you, dear readers, hoping to help you avoid some of the pitfalls we faced.

My two worst parenting mistakes with my daughter were allowing her to attend a sleepover against my gut instincts and letting her play Roblox. I won't dwell on the sleepover issue beyond saying it's often best to avoid them. Parents must decide for themselves, but always trust your instincts.

Today, I'll focus on the problems with Roblox. My three older children weren't allowed to play video games, except for a handheld Gameboy one of them had. They had to ask for it and earn time, which was never an issue. Then, COVID hit, and my social eighth-grader was stuck at home, bored to tears. She said all her friends were 'meeting' on a platform called Roblox and asked to join. At the time, friends and family were connecting on Zoom for virtual 'happy hours,' so I allowed it. That was a big mistake.

To protect my daughter's privacy, I won't share all the details, but I later discovered that adults can and do prey on children on Roblox. The platform has minimal protections. While parents are responsible for keeping their children safe, companies marketing to kids should have basic safety measures in place. That's why I was thrilled to see Florida taking action against Roblox today.

Not only is it a breeding ground for predators, but also people like Lorenz who seek to radicalize children into specific political persuasions.

If you have children or grandchildren, learn from our mistake and don't allow your children on this platform. Save yourself and the children you love from emotional damage and heartache. It's not worth it.
