USA Shocks Canada in OT for First Men's Hockey Gold Since 1980 – Golden Goal Glory on Miracle Day

The last time the United States won gold in Olympic men's hockey was 1980—the Miracle on Ice. I was in kindergarten back then. Now, at 50 years old, I've finally seen it happen again. Today—February 22, 2026—Team USA defeated Canada 2-1 in overtime, with Jack Hughes scoring the golden goal at 1:41 to seal the victory. Connor Hellebuyck was a wall in net, stopping 41 shots. It's the first men's hockey gold for the U.S. in 46 years, exactly on the anniversary of that legendary 1980 triumph. My son called me from the fire station (he's on shift today), and I could hear the hooting and hollering in the background—pure joy erupting across the country. A whole new generation now gets to experience the real-life drama that inspired the movie Miracle. What a day for America. The U.S. women's team also took gold earlier, completing an incredible hockey sweep. X has been electric today: Americans uniting to celebrate our Olympians who proudly love their country, while mocking our neighbors to the north.

Today, has brought memories flooding back for so many Americans.

Grab your tissues before you read this one.

It's so nice to see men proud to compete for their country. What a nice change after others who took to microphones and disparaged their own country.

A few tweets dunking on Canada have to be included. That's been a hoot today. They are so mad.

Even our military is happy today.

Hopefully, America won't have to wait another forty years for another gold medal in hockey. Judging by the excitement of today, I believe a whole new generation will set their sights on competing for the American Olympic team one day.
