As Twitchy reported yesterday, the devastating Waldo Canyon fire is spreading and more and more evacuation orders are being issued. Even just a scant few years ago, spreading the word would have been much more difficult. And people in other parts of the country would either be unaware or would have received only the most cursory of reports.

Not so today. Social media, particularly Twitter, is helping to spread the word.

Sheriff’s offices and newspapers use the hashtag #WaldoCanyonFire to keep people abreast of the latest developments.

Twitter users help them to disseminate the information. Still others report with on-the-ground information and help residents locate loved ones.

Twitter users also help people understand the scope and the devastation of the fire by providing on-the-scene photographs instantaneously.
