J.K. Rowling has some thoughts on Vladimir Putin invoking her name to paint himself as a cancel culture victim

Our most recent coverage of J.K. Rowling as almost exclusively focused on her advocacy for women and willingness to take an unapologetic stand against the radical trans activism that seeks to erase women’s sexual identities.

But Rowling is plenty passionate about other issues. Like the evil of murderous tyrannical regimes, for example. So, when she learned that murderous tyrannical Russian President Vladimir Putin had invoked her name in order to paint himself as a victim of cancel culture, you can imagine that she was decidedly not amused.

Here’s Putin with his hot take:

More from VICE:

“They canceled Joanne Rowling recently, the children’s author. Her books are published all over the world,” Putin said. “Just because she didn’t satisfy the demands of gender rights.”

Putin compared the criticism Rowling has received for her transphobic politics to a great variety of perceived indignities to the Russian people: the apparent removal of Russian writers and composers from undefined places in the West, Nazi book burnings, and even America dropping the nuclear bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki during World War II.

“We remember that footage when they were burning books,” Putin said. “It’s impossible to imagine such a thing in our country. We’re insured against these things thanks to our culture.”

OK, Vlad.

Anyway, as we noted above, Rowling was less than flattered at Putin suggesting that she’s some kind of cancel culture soul sister. Here’s how she responded:

Can we get an “amen”? How about a million of them? Because she didn’t just drop the mic on Vladimir Putin; she beat him senseless with it.

Naturally, more than a few of Rowling’s woke detractors will use this to draw favorable comparisons between Rowling’s views and Putin’s views.

Oh, please.

Exactly. Fortunately, J.K. Rowling hasn’t shown herself to be the type of activist to apologize for speaking up for women — or speaking out against Vladimir Putin. We don’t agree with all of her politics by any stretch, but when it comes to some of the biggest global issues out there, she’s rock-solid.
