Donald Trump’s recent comments about Gavin Newsom during an interview with Fox News’ Tucker Carlson have generated quite a bit of buzz, and understandably so.
TRUMP: "I used to get along great with" Gavin Newsom!"
TUCKER: "Wait, you got along with Gavin Newsom?!"
TRUMP: "He was always very nice to me. He said the greatest things."
TUCKER: "About you?!"

Of course, if you stop and think about it, it’s not really all that surprising that Trump would have nice things to say about Gavin Newsom. After all, Donald Trump spent most of his adult life being a Democrat and donating to Democratic politicians, including Gavin Newsom.

Anyway, as terrible as Trump’s praise for Newsom looks, what viewers of the interview should be even more repulsed by is Trump’s effusive praise for Chinese President Xi Jinping:

Now, it’s important to point out that this isn’t the first time that Donald Trump has expressed his admiration for Xi. As an aspiring authoritarian himself, he has a great deal to learn from Xi Jinping. And Kim Jong-un, for that matter, for whom he has also expressed his admiration.
But still, it never gets any easier to listen to Trump say nice things about communist tyrants.

It’s a gross thought, but also any appropriate one. And if it were Joe Biden talking about how brilliant and awesome Xi is, you can believe that anyone defending Donald Trump over this would be accusing Biden of spinelessness and being an apologist for homicidal dictators. And they’d be right.
